There is a particular sound a floured bench makes under the heel of a hand and there is no other sound like it, and if you have worked in a bakery you can hear it now.
Three of them along the bench. The oldest one has the radio on so low it is really only a rumor of a radio. The young one is on his third week and is getting there, and the shaping is the part that takes longest to learn, because you cannot be taught tension, you have to feel it arrive under your palm. And her, in the middle, doing it the way she has done it for eleven years, which is to say without looking.
It is warm. It smells the way it smells. In two hours the front will open and a town that has no idea any of this happened will come in and buy it.
She woke at four. She wakes at four most days, and it is not the shift, because the shift starts at half past. It is that at four o'clock a voice starts, and it brings up the same thing it brings up every morning, and she lies there and answers it. She has been answering it for a long time. She is quite good at the arguments now. She has whole passages by heart.
And she has never once, in all those years, asked the only question that actually matters about that voice, which is not whether it is right.
It is who it thinks it is.
Sit down here with me a while. Something was done to you by another person, a long way back. I am not going to ask you what it was, not here and not later and not at the end. I will not ask you to tell one human being anything, ever. Nothing in this wants the thing itself.
Paul does not argue the case. He asks who is bringing it.
There is a passage in Romans where Paul is dealing with exactly your four o'clock, and the thing to notice is what he refuses to do.
He does not go through the charge point by point. He does not build a defense. He does not say here is why you are actually fine, which is what everybody who loves you has tried and which has never once held past breakfast.
He asks a procedural question, and it is devastating.
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.Romans 8:33
Who. Not what. Not whether. Who.
Because a charge is not a feeling and it is not a memory. A charge is a legal act, and a legal act requires somebody with standing to bring it, and Paul is standing in the middle of the courtroom asking the room to produce that person.
And then he answers his own question in six words. It is God that justifieth. The only one in existence with the standing to bring a charge against you has already ruled, in the other direction, and has entered it.
You are justified by God Himself, and you were never facing a charge anybody had the standing to file. I am not offering you reassurance. The written word makes it a question of jurisdiction rather than of evidence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and gets it into a woman lying awake at four.
You have been answering somebody with no standing
I want to sit with the four o'clock a moment longer, because you have been at it for years and you deserve to know what has actually been happening.
You have been conducting a defense in an empty court. The bench is empty. There is no prosecutor with a brief. What there is, is a voice, and it has been permitted to bring the same thing every morning because nobody ever asked it for its credentials.
And note this, because it matters: an act belongs to the person whose hands did it. God arranged the moral universe that way deliberately, so that no person could ever be charged with somebody else's doing. Scripture says the soul that sins bears its own iniquity, that a son does not carry a father's guilt and a father does not carry a son's.
So the charge is not merely unproven. It was never filed, because it could not be.
You are free of an accusation that has no author with standing, and you were answering an empty bench. Scripture puts the whole thing in the language of a court on purpose, and it is His Spirit, not the quality of your arguments, who quiets a room at four in the morning.
So here is what to do. Four words. Nobody hears it but God.
Say it out loud. Once. Today. It was not mine.
No detail. No explaining. Nothing said to any person, now or ever. If you never tell a living soul for the rest of your life, you are a whole woman, and this message has done everything it came for.
And one thing said plainly, because a page is not always the help a person needs. If what was done to you is still happening, or if tonight feels frightening, reach for a person rather than a page. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and somebody real answers. In the United Kingdom, 116 123. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or a national support line, and if you do not know it, a search will find it in under a minute. You never have to describe anything to anybody in order to ask for help staying. One person who can act is worth more tonight than anything I can write.
You are held by a ruling that was entered by the only Judge with jurisdiction, and you were acquitted before you woke up. That is what the written word settles in Romans 8, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it off a page and onto a floured bench at five in the morning.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground under every word coming next. This is not a feeling being worked up. It is agreement out loud with a ruling already entered, and how tomorrow's four o'clock goes, and the one after, the outcome is His. The written word is what settled it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it.
- Bench in the dark before the town wakes, you are flour and steel and a good place to be. You were never a courtroom and there is no case being heard in you. The written word says it is God who justifies, and I am shaping bread in you with a quiet head.
- Voice that brings it up again at four, you have no standing and you never filed anything, and I refuse you the floor in the name of Jesus. A charge needs somebody with the right to bring it. It was not mine, and it never wrote my name.
- Lord, You are the only Judge with jurisdiction and You have already ruled. I am not defending myself in an empty room any more. And the verdict was entered a long time before I woke up this morning.
