Not What HappenedZephaniah 3:19

Pins in Somebody Else's Hem

This message is for A woman kneeling in a fitting room with a mouthful of pins turning up the hem of somebody else's dress, who is the one everybody sends for and who long ago drew a quiet line about which days in this life belong to her, because of something another person did.

She has the pins in the corner of her mouth, which every woman who was taught properly was told never to do, and every woman who was taught properly does anyway.

Three inches to come up and it wants to be even, and even is harder than people think, because a floor is never level and a person never stands the same twice. So it is: stand still, love. Now turn a quarter. Now stop fidgeting. And the bride, who is twenty-six and has been on her feet since seven and is not fidgeting on purpose, laughs and apologizes and fidgets again.

There is a chair with four coats on it. There is somebody's mother in the corner being very calm in a way that everybody can hear. There is tea in a mug that has gone cold on the windowsill.

And there is her, on the floor, doing what she has done for thirty years, which is the hem.

She does everybody's. Two of her nieces, a girl from the road, the woman from church whose daughter went abroad. She has knelt in a lot of fitting rooms with a lot of pins in her mouth and she is genuinely, uncomplicatedly glad each time, and that is not a front.

But a long time ago she drew a line. Not out loud, not in one moment, and never as a decision anybody could have argued with. The line simply appeared, and it separated the days in this life into the ones that are for other people and the ones that are for her, and there are none in the second column, and the reason the line got drawn is something another person did.

Come and sit down by me. I am not going to ask you what it was, not now, not later, not at the end of this. I will not ask you to say a word about it to any living person, ever. Nothing here wants the thing itself.

Two words in that verse, and both of them are done-to words

There is a promise in Zephaniah that I want to set in front of you, and the way to read it is to look at who exactly is being spoken about.

I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.Zephaniah 3:19

Her that halteth. That is the one who limps. Something happened to a leg. Nobody limps on purpose.

Her that was driven out. Driven. By somebody. That is not a woman who wandered off and it is not a woman who chose the outside; that is a woman who was pushed there by another party with the strength to push.

Both of those are done-to words. Neither one is about anything the woman did. And God, who chooses His words with a care we do not deserve, uses those two and not others.

You are the one this promise is addressed to, and you were named in it by the very thing that happened to you rather than in spite of it. I am not being generous with you there. The written word picks the vocabulary of people who were acted upon, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and gets it down onto a fitting room floor.

He does not move the reversal somewhere else

Now the part I want you to keep.

He says in every land where they have been put to shame.

He does not say He will take them somewhere new and start again where nobody knows. That would be a kindness of a sort, and it is the kindness people offer, and it is what you would probably settle for. He says the reversal happens in the same place. The same land. The same streets, the same rooms, the same people.

Which means the line you drew, about which days are for other people and which are for you, was drawn on a map God has already marked up differently.

You have a portion in the very rooms where it went wrong, and you were never meant to be quietly rehoused out of your own life. That is what the written word says plainly, and His Spirit is the one who makes a promise about a place feel like a place rather than a sentiment.

The breakthrough

So here is the thing to do, and it is four words, and only God hears it.

Say it out loud. Once. Today. It was not mine.

No detail. No explaining. Nothing said to a single person, now or at any time. If you never tell one living soul for the rest of your life, you are a whole woman and this message has done everything it came for.

And one straight word first, because a page is not always the help a person needs. If what was done to you is still happening, or if tonight feels frightening, reach for a person rather than a page. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and a real person answers. In the United Kingdom, 116 123. Anywhere else, the emergency number where you live or a national line, and if you do not know it, a search will find it in under a minute. You never have to describe anything to anybody to ask for help staying. One person who can act is worth more tonight than anything I can write.

You are gathered by God Himself and you were named as the one who was driven out, not as the one who left. That is what the written word settles in Zephaniah 3, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it off a page and onto a fitting room floor on a spring afternoon.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground under every word coming next. This is not a feeling being worked up. It is agreement out loud with a promise God made about a place, and how this spring sits, and how the next one sits, the outcome is His. The written word is what settled it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it.

  1. Hem I am pinning for somebody else, you are three inches of good cloth and a job I am glad of. You were never a statement about which days belong to me. The written word promises a turn in the very place, and I am glad to be on this floor today.
  2. Line I drew about which days are mine, you are chalk and not a border, and I rub you out in the name of Jesus. God names me as the one who was driven out, not the one who left. It was not mine, and it never wrote my name.
  3. Lord, You save the one who limps and You gather the one who was pushed. I am staying in my own life and not being quietly rehoused out of it. And You have marked this map up differently the whole time.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
