There is a jug of water in the middle of that table and it has four glasses round it and nobody has poured any, because nobody ever does, and everybody in the room knows nobody ever does, and the jug sits there anyway at every interview in every building in the country.
Three of them on one side. A woman with a folder. A man who has clearly been told to be on this panel and would rather be somewhere else. A younger one at the end taking notes on a laptop and doing the thing where she nods encouragingly at the end of every answer.
And her, on this side, doing very well. Genuinely well. She has the examples ready, she is warm, she laughs in the right place at the joke about the parking. She is going to get this job and she does not know it yet.
She gives every one of her answers to the jug.
Not obviously. She does the sweep. She looks up at the start of a sentence, takes in three faces for maybe a second and a half, and then her eyes come to rest on the water and stay there for the rest of the answer, and come up again for the next question. It is smooth. It has had years of practice on it. And what it means is that in fifty minutes she has looked at three human faces for perhaps forty seconds in total, and every one of those forty seconds cost her something, and none of them can tell.
If you know exactly what that is, come and sit down here, and let me say who I am talking to before I say anything else. Not the one carrying a thing another person did to them. That is a separate message on this site, it is written for you, and it does not use one word of what is coming. Today I am talking to the one who did something, took it to God properly and meant it, and cannot hold a face in a room where nobody knows anything.
Two wounds arrived together and only one got treated
Guilt says: I did something wrong. Shame says: I am something wrong.
They walk in together and they use the same voice, so nobody separates them for you. That is why an honest woman confesses a thing properly, and means it right down to the floor, and finds that nothing has moved.
Confession is the medicine for guilt and it is a real one and it worked on you. That account closed. You would say so out loud in front of that panel if the question came up, and every word of it would be true.
Shame is not a verdict about an act, it is a verdict about a person, and the medicine for guilt was never built to reach it. So the last decade of going back over the thing was not thin faith and it was not evidence about your heart. It was the right remedy carried into the wrong room, again and again, by a woman doing her honest best with what she had been handed.
You are cleared of every count that was ever brought, and you are not the count. That is not warmth from me. It is written that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the confidence in my sentence, who takes a settled matter down out of a woman's head and into the room she is standing in.
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.2 Corinthians 4:6
Read the end of that verse slowly, because Paul does something there that most people walk straight past.
He is describing the greatest act of God there is: light spoken into a dark place, the first thing on the first page. And then he tells you where that same light shows up now, and he does not say in a doctrine, or in a rule, or in a system.
He says in a face.
The knowledge of the glory of God comes to human beings in the face of Jesus Christ. That is the delivery method. God, who could have chosen anything, chose a face.
You have the light of the knowledge of God shining in you, and you have it because a face was turned toward you first. That is what the written word says outright, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes light spoken over a person feel like light rather than like information.
Looking up is a creation, not a technique
Which brings me to the thing I want you to carry out of here.
Every self-help version of this is about you. Hold the gaze three seconds longer. Practice in front of a mirror. Fake it until your nervous system settles down. And I am not going to sneer at any of that, because some of it is useful and none of it is wicked.
It is simply not what is happening here.
God commanded light to shine out of darkness. That is not a technique. That is a creation, and nothing in a dark place contributes to it, and no darkness anywhere has ever been asked to try harder before the light was allowed in.
So the lifting of your face is not a skill you are behind on. It is a work being done, and the same voice that got the light going on the first page is the one doing it.
You are being lit by a word that has never yet failed to produce what it said, and you were dark ground and not a failed student. Scripture says He spoke and it was, and it is His Spirit, not your practice, who carries a spoken thing into a real body in a real week.
So this is the moment, and it is small, and it is everything.
Lift your head. Once. Today. On purpose.
Not because you feel steady and not to prove anything to any panel anywhere. Faith is an open hand and never a fee, and if your hand is still closed then working at this until it opens is my job and it has never once been your failing.
And one straight thing first, because a page on a screen is not always the help a person needs. If what sits under this has gone past a heavy season into hours when being here at all feels like too much, tell one living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line: 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. You never have to tell anybody the thing itself in order to ask for help staying. That is not a step away from God. It is one of the oldest ways He has ever sent help.
You have a face turned toward you that carries the whole glory of God in it, and you were the dark place He commanded light into. That is what the written word says in 2 Corinthians 4, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it off the page and into a meeting room with a jug of water in it.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground under every word coming next. This is not a mood being talked up. It is agreement out loud with light God commanded, and how it sits tonight, and next month, the outcome is His. The written word is what settled it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it.
- Panel of three and a jug of water, you are an interview and not a tribunal. Nobody at that table was ever holding a verdict about me. The written word says the light of God comes in a face, and I am giving my answers to faces from here.
- Habit of answering the table, you are a groove worn by a hard year, and I break your hold in the name of Jesus. God did not ask the darkness to improve before He spoke. He spoke, and that is why this is not mine to manufacture.
- Lord, You commanded light out of darkness and You chose a face to carry it. I am looking up at Yours today. And You have been shining in me on every single day I was looking at the water.
