The Folder Nobody Moved

The green crate lives under the hatch in the corridor, and the folders in it are alphabetical because a retired postman insisted on it years ago and nobody has ever dared change the system. Tuesdays at seven, people come through, take theirs out, and go and put the chairs in the horseshoe. The hall is cold for the first twenty minutes. There is a piano that needs tuning in the same two places it has needed tuning since before the roof was done, and there is always, always an argument about whether the sopranos are too loud, which is really an argument about something else and everybody enjoys it.

One folder has not come out of that crate since March. Her name is on the spine in biro, in her own handwriting, gone slightly furry at the edge from the plastic. Nobody moved it. Nobody has filed it away or given it to somebody new, and it is not a statement, it is simply that a person's folder stays where a person's folder goes.

Four miles away, at that exact hour, she is folding towels with the radio on. She could tell you what they are working on this term. She could tell you which page they will be stuck on and who will make the joke. She stopped going eleven weeks ago and the reason she stopped is hers, and it stays hers, and it does not need to appear anywhere in this message for the message to work.

Because here is the thing she has never quite said out loud, and I think you may know it before I finish the sentence. It is not the reason keeping her away any more. She has been fine, in the way people mean when they say fine. What keeps her in the kitchen at seven o'clock on a Tuesday is the doorway. It is the seven feet of scuffed lino between the outside door and the crate, and the possibility of a warm face turning round, and a perfectly kind voice saying, oh, hello, where have you been? She does not have an answer she is willing to hand over. So she does not go. And the longer she does not go, the bigger the answer she imagines she owes, until the debt is enormous and entirely invented and she is folding towels in a quiet house while people who like her sing without her.

The doorway is not a border

Let me say the weight of this plainly first, because it is usually described as if it were nothing.

Withdrawal is not laziness and it is not a spiritual failure. It is what a person does when being seen has started to cost more than being alone, and it works, which is exactly why it is so hard to leave. The house gets quiet. Nobody asks anything. And then one week turns into eleven, and a new thing arrives that was not there at the start: a story you now feel you owe, growing interest. That is the real trap. Not the first absence. The rent charged on the return.

So hear me before anything else, because it is the thing I want in your hands whatever else you take. There is no debt. Nobody in that room is holding an invoice with your name on it, and God is not holding one either. That is not my opinion about your friends; it is what stands written over you, and it is His Spirit who makes an old line about faces land on a woman with a towel in her hands.

Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.Psalm 34:5

Look at what David does not say. He does not say their faces were repaired, or explained, or cleared by a committee. He says they looked to Him and were radiant. The direction of the look is the whole verse. A face that is turned toward God is not simultaneously turned toward the doorway rehearsing a sentence, and it is not being lit from inside the room either. The light is coming off Him and landing on them.

Which means your face is not a document. It carries no summary of the last eleven weeks and it owes nobody a précis. Scripture puts the radiance on the ones who look at Him and never once makes it conditional on what the room knows, and His Spirit is the one who turns a head that has been down for a long time.

Now watch Jesus do this in an actual room, because He handles it in a way that should settle something in you.

There is a woman in Luke 13 who has been bent over for eighteen years. She comes into the synagogue on the Sabbath, into the back of it, where a person goes who does not want to be a topic. And Jesus sees her and calls her over. Out of the back, across the floor, in front of everybody. Then He says: woman, you are freed. That is Luke 13:12, and count the questions He asks her on the way. There are none. Not one. No account of the eighteen years, no explanation of why she came in late, no interview at the door. He calls her forward and speaks freedom over her, and the room finds out at the same time she does.

So take this and keep it. You are welcome without an account. The door was opened for you by somebody who has never once required a person's history before letting them through it, and that stands written into the way He handled every room He was ever in. His Spirit is the one carrying that across two thousand years and putting it in the hall with the tuneless piano.

Hebrews says the same thing from the other direction, and it is the boldest sentence in the letter. Since we have confidence to enter by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way He opened for us, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance. Hebrews 10:19 to 22. Draw near. Not draw near once you have prepared a statement. If the door into the presence of God Himself does not have a desk at it, no church hall does, and no kitchen, and no street where somebody might see you.

And this is the part that turns knowing into having. It does not take much. Jesus put the smallest measurement He could find, a seed you would not bother picking up if you dropped it, next to a mountain and said the mountain moves for a word. Matthew 17:20. Notice He did not say the word has to be brave, or steady, or said without a shake in it. The word has to be said. Not thought about on the landing, not rehearsed while the towels get folded. Said.

You have the standing to say it, and it belongs to you because you are in Christ and Christ is in you. It is yours, and His Spirit is the one who gives an ordinary sentence its weight, not the volume of your voice and not the state of your nerve tonight.
