Reading the Letter Out Loud to Nobody

This message is for A woman reading an ordinary appointment letter out loud in an empty kitchen because reading a thing aloud is how she makes it real, who has never once used that same mechanism on anything God has said about her.

The letter is nothing. That is the first thing to say about it.

It is a standard appointment letter, printed slightly crooked, with a date and a time and a department and a paragraph about the car park that is longer than the paragraph about the appointment. There is a bit at the bottom about bringing a list of medications. There is a phone number that goes to a queue.

She opens it standing up by the kettle and then she sits down at the table and reads it out loud.

Nobody is in. She has done this since she was a girl, and she does it with anything that matters: forms, instructions, the terms on the back of something. Her mother did it and her grandmother did it, and it is not a quirk, it is a method, and it works. Say it out loud and it becomes a real thing in the room with you instead of a piece of paper you have looked at.

By the time she has read it out she knows the date, she knows the department, she knows about the car park. It is dealt with.

And running underneath all of that, at the same table, in the same kitchen, is a running commentary about herself that she has never once read out loud. Not to anybody, and not to the room, and not to God.

Which is a remarkable thing when you think about it, because she has a method that works and she has never applied it in the one place it would count.

If that is you, sit down at the table here with me. Today I am speaking to the one who did something, years back, and took it to God properly and meant it, and has been narrated ever since. I am not going to ask you what it was, and I will not ask you to tell anybody.

You already know how to make a sentence real

Let me start where you are, because you are further along than you think.

You have a working method. You do not need convincing that a thing said out loud lands differently from a thing looked at. You do it with a letter about a car park.

And you have never done it with a sentence God wrote about you.

That is not a failure of faith. It has simply never occurred to anybody to tell you, because everybody assumes that Scripture is for reading and the commentary is for enduring, and nobody says out loud that you can put one of them through the other.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.Ephesians 2:10

The word there for workmanship is poiema. It is a made thing. A crafted thing, the sort of noun you use for something a person sat down and worked on rather than something that simply came about.

That is what God calls you in that sentence, and He calls you it in the present tense, and He does not attach a single condition to it.

You are God's own crafted work, and you were made that rather than asked to become it. I am not offering you a nice thought. The written word uses a maker's noun in the present tense in that verse, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it off a page and gets it into a kitchen where a woman is sitting on her own.

Prepared beforehand, which settles the question of usefulness

There is a second half to that verse and it deals with a thing your commentary brings up constantly.

Which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The good works were prepared in advance. Before. They were laid out before you got here, and they were laid out by Someone who already knew every single thing about the years that trouble you, because He is not working from your file, He wrote the plan before there was a file.

So the question your commentary keeps asking, which is whether you are still of any use, was settled before it was ever asked, by a preparation that did not consult the record.

You have work prepared for you in advance, and you were never disqualified by anything the commentary has on you. That is what the written word puts in the second half of that sentence, and it is His Spirit who makes a settled question stay settled in a person who has been reopening it for years.

The breakthrough

So we are going to use the method you already have.

Take a piece of paper. Write down, in its own words, one sentence you habitually say about yourself. Not the worst one. An ordinary one, the kind that turns up at the kettle.

Underneath it, write one sentence God says. Second person, out of Scripture. You are His workmanship. You are accepted in the Beloved. You are not condemned. Any true one will do.

Then read the second one out loud, once, exactly the way you read the letter.

That is the whole thing. You are not required to feel different afterward. You are not required to believe it more than the first one today, and if you do not, that is my work still to do and it has never been a fault in you.

And one thing plainly, because a page is not always the help a person needs. If what runs under this has gone past a heavy stretch into hours when being here at all feels like too much, tell one living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line: 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. You never have to tell anybody the thing itself in order to ask for help staying.

You are His workmanship at that kitchen table this afternoon, and you were His workmanship on every day the other sentence was the only one you said out loud. That is what the written word settles in Ephesians 2, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it off the page and into a room with a crooked letter on the table.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground under every word coming next. This is not a feeling being worked up. It is agreement out loud with a sentence God wrote about you, and how this evening sits, and how the month sits, the outcome is His. The written word is what settled it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it.

  1. Letter on the kitchen table, you are a date and a department and a car park code. You are dealt with, because I read you out loud, which is how a thing becomes real in this house. The written word calls me God's own workmanship, and that is going through the same method today.
  2. Habit of reading the worst line twice, you have had my out loud voice for years and never once had to share it, and I take it back in the name of Jesus. The good works were prepared before I got here. Nothing in the file was consulted.
  3. Lord, You call me Your workmanship in the present tense with no condition anywhere near it. I am reading Your sentence out loud at this table this afternoon. And You laid the work out in advance, before there was ever a file to read.
