The gown goes on and the chair swings round, and there it is again: the whole wall is a mirror, and the mirror is where the conversation happens. That is the arrangement in every one of these places. The hairdresser talks to your reflection. She asks about the holiday and the grandchildren and whether the fringe is behaving, and she asks all of it to a face in the glass, waiting for the face to answer.
So the face finds something else to do. It watches the scissors. It watches the little pile building up on the floor, the pattern in the tiles, the pot of clips on the shelf with two of them missing. It reads the price list twice, and the price list has not changed since March. There is a whole appointment's worth of things to look at in a room whose main feature is a mirror, and she has become quietly expert at all of them.
Nobody notices. Everybody in that shop is warm and busy and none of them is paying attention to where her eyes are, and the water at the basin is properly hot, and it smells of shampoo and somebody's toast, and the radio is on low. It is a nice morning out. It really is.
And she is forty minutes into it before she lets herself notice what she is doing, and the noticing goes through her like a stone dropped down a well. Because she believes she is forgiven. She does. She brought it to God and she meant every word, and something did settle, and she has not gone back and dug it up again on the bad nights the way she used to. The account is closed. She would say so out loud.
She simply cannot look at her own eyes for more than a second, and she has not been able to for a very long time, and if forgiveness fixed this then something has plainly not been fixed.
Two different weights, and only one of them is guilt
Let me say who this is for, plainly, because getting this wrong would do harm. This is written for the reader who did something, brought it to God, believes the forgiveness, and still cannot lift her face. If what you carry belongs to something that was done to you, then this is not your door, and there is another one on this site with your name on it. That weight is not yours and it is never spoken about here as though it were.
So. Guilt and shame are two different weights, and the reason confession has not lifted the second one is that confession was never built to.
Guilt is about a thing done. It has an object, a shape, an actual event with a beginning and an end. It can be named, brought, put down, and answered, and in Christ it has been answered, once, completely, at a cost nobody in the room could have covered. Shame has no object. Shame is not a report about an act at all. Shame is a verdict about a person, and its whole sentence is four words long: I am something wrong. You can confess an act every day for thirty years and never once touch a verdict, because a verdict is not an act, and the medicine does not fit the illness.
That is why you are not failing at this. Hear that as a finished thing rather than as reassurance. You have been taking the right medicine for the wrong ailment, faithfully, and the faithfulness was real. Scripture never asks anybody to confess their way out of an identity, and the Holy Spirit has not been standing over you waiting for a better performance of sorrow. He has been waiting to lift your head.
Because that is where Scripture puts it. Not in your nerve. Not in your progress. In a pair of hands.
But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.Psalm 3:3
Notice who said it and when. A king on the run from his own son, out of the city, up the hill, weeping as he went. Not a man in the clear. Not a man with a tidy account of himself. And in the middle of the worst week of his life he says the lifting is God's job, in the present tense, as a thing God is doing rather than a thing he must find the strength for.
There is a line in another psalm that says those who looked to Him were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed. Look at the order of that sentence. The looking comes first and the radiance follows. Nobody in it is instructed to feel better before they lift their eyes, and nobody in it is asked to arrive with a face already fit to be seen.
So here is what is yours right now, while you still feel exactly what you felt in the chair. You are not the verdict you have been living under, and you were never the thing that was wrong. What God did about the thing, He did completely, and He has said nothing since about you being something wrong, because it was never true and He does not deal in things that are not true. That is written, and His Spirit is the one making it live in you as you read it, which is why it can land on a morning when your feelings have not caught up at all.
And if what you are carrying has gone further than heaviness, into thinking about not being here any more, please tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line: 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or whatever the emergency number is where you are. You do not have to tell anybody the thing itself in order to ask for help staying. Reaching for a human being is not a step backwards from anything God is doing here. It is part of it, and I am asking you to do it.
Something is being offered to you in this room, and it is smaller and better than a feeling. It is a fact you can act on while the feeling is still exactly as it was.
You have a God whose face is turned toward you, and there is nothing in it for you to flinch from. That is not a mood I am trying to talk you into. It is what the word says about how He looks at those who are His, and the Holy Spirit is pressing it in while you read, because a truth about a face has to be received by a face.
So the lift does not wait until you feel worthy of it. It never did. Lifting is His work, and your part is only to let your head come up while He does it.
And if it drops again before lunch, nothing has been undone. This is not a test you can fail by feeling something.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing, or in the chair, or wherever you actually are. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what is said here is not you talking yourself round; it is you agreeing out loud with what He has already settled, and the authority for it belongs to Him and is given to you. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it, never the steadiness of your voice. Whatever He does with your feelings today is His to decide, and none of this depends on how much lighter you feel by the end of it.
- Mirror in front of me, you show a face and you have never once been able to tell me what it is worth. The word of God says He is a shield around me and the lifter of my head, so the worth of this face was settled somewhere you cannot see. I am looking at what you show me and I am not flinching.
- Old suspicion that the pardon stopped short, stand still and look at what is written. In the name of Jesus I put you under it: what He forgave, He forgave to the ground, and His Spirit has never once whispered that the person is still the problem. You do not get to be the thing I check my face against.
- Lord, You are looking at me right now and there is nothing in Your face for me to flinch from. I thank You, because You lift a head the way You lift a morning, and You have never needed asking twice. My eyes are coming up, and Yours never went down.
