Standing In Daylight2 Corinthians 3:12

Fill The Feeder At Nine

This message is for A man who fills the bird feeder at twenty past seven so the street will not see him do it wants one ordinary morning with the commentary switched off.

He fills the bird feeder at twenty past seven, and he has never once told anybody why.

The reason he gives himself is that the birds come earlier in the cold. That is even true. But the other reason, the one underneath, is that at twenty past seven the street is still asleep, and a man can carry a scoop of sunflower hearts down his own path, unhook the feeder from the apple tree, fill it, hang it back on the same branch, and be inside again with the kettle on before a single curtain moves. Nine minutes. He knows how long it takes because he has timed it.

Nothing happened at that bird feeder. Nothing has ever happened at that bird feeder. There is one thing about him that nobody in that street knows and nobody in that street is ever going to know, and it has nothing whatever to do with birds, and it has quietly reorganized his morning anyway. It has moved the bins to Sunday night. It has him parking at the far end so he can come in through the side. It does not shout. It just keeps a running commentary going under everything he does, all day, in a reasonable tone of voice, and the commentary has one theme, and the theme is that he had better not be looked at too closely.

And if you have your own version of twenty past seven, you already know that the exhausting part is not the thing itself. The exhausting part is the scheduling.

Nobody in that street is taking notes

I am writing this to the one carrying something nobody knows. Not the one carrying what somebody else did, which is a different weight and gets a different word from me; the one who has a thing of their own in the locked drawer and has decided, reasonably enough, that it stays there.

Let me say what today actually costs you, because a message that skips the cost is only cheerfulness, and cheerfulness has never once lifted a face.

You do not get an ordinary morning. Other people get one. Other people go out and fill a feeder and think about the feeder. What you get is the feeder plus the running commentary, the small constant work of managing how visible a person is, the arithmetic of hours and angles and side gates. It is not dramatic and there is nobody to tell about it, and by half nine there is a tiredness in you that has no name and no cause anybody could write on a form.

Here is the thing about that commentary. It is not conscience. Conscience is specific and it is about an act, and when the act is dealt with, conscience is finished with you, because it was only ever a verdict on a deed. What runs under your morning is not making a verdict on a deed. It is making one about a person, and no amount of dealing with the deed touches it, which is exactly why that route was already tried here and left everything exactly where it was.

Since we have such a hope, we are very bold.2 Corinthians 3:12

That word Paul uses is a broad old word. It means open speech, an unhidden face, the freedom of a person who is not managing what can be seen of them. And look where he puts it. Not at the end of a long recovery. Not after a disclosure. He hangs the whole of it on a hope that was handed over, which means the boldness is a possession and not an achievement.

So take this now, at twenty past seven, before anything about you has changed. You are not under examination on your own front path, and you were never a premises being inspected. That is not my opinion of your morning, it is what is written over you in the letter, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the sentence, who makes a line like that go all the way down into a person.

And He is not being brave on your behalf while privately agreeing with the commentary. This is the part that gets missed. God is not looking at you and looking away. Scripture says He searched you out and knew you before there was a word on your tongue, and He has never once had to be told anything about you, and He came toward you anyway and He is here at this hour. His Spirit is in you, right now, which is not a thing that happens to premises under inspection.

You have boldness the way a person has a name. You did not build it and you cannot mislay it, and the word says plainly that it comes with the hope and not with the mood. The Spirit who lives in you is not waiting for you to feel unashamed before He will call you it.

Then how does a possession become a Tuesday?

By your mouth, mostly. Paul says the word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart, and he says it in the middle of an argument about how a person receives anything from God at all. Not up in heaven where somebody would have to fetch it down. Not across the sea where somebody would have to bring it over. Near. In the mouth. And it becomes yours in the saying of it, which is why God keeps asking people to open their mouths and say a thing they cannot yet feel. That is not pretending. Pretending is saying something false. This is saying something true ahead of your own nervous system, which is a different act entirely and has a name in Scripture, and the name is faith.

You were given a voice for exactly this, and the word you put in your mouth is His word before it is yours, carried there by His Spirit and not by your nerve. Use it on something small and ordinary. Nobody is asking you to say the thing to anybody, today or ever. This site will never ask you that.

The breakthrough

You are unashamed today, and it does not run on anybody knowing anything, and it does not run on your feelings agreeing.

Look at what the word actually rests on. It rests on a hope He handed you, sealed by His Spirit, and the whole of it was settled long before this morning and without consulting the commentary. Nothing in your street can vote on it. Nothing in the drawer can revoke it.

I am not going to tell you the commentary has stopped. I do not know that, and a message that promised it would be lying to you in a warm voice. What I will tell you is that it has lost its authority over the hour, and that a thing with no authority can still be loud. Loud is survivable. Loud is not a verdict.

And if it runs the whole of tomorrow, nothing today gets undone. This is not a streak that has to be kept.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing up, out in the light if you can manage it and by a window if you cannot. The boldness in them is yours already and it came with the hope, not with your progress, and what God does with the feeling underneath is His and His timing is His own. Second Corinthians 3:12 is the ground you are standing on, and His Spirit is the one who takes a sentence off a page and settles it in a person.

  1. Ordinary Tuesday, you get me at nine o'clock with my head up and my hands full. The word says the hope came with boldness attached, so I am not paying the toll of an earlier hour to walk down my own path. Twenty past seven, you can keep the birds; I am keeping the morning.
  2. Verdict I passed on myself, you do not get to write my schedule. God searched me out and knew me before there was a word on my tongue, and He came toward me with the whole file open, in the name of Jesus. You are overruled at a higher desk than yours.
  3. Father, You have never once had to be told anything about me and You have never once looked away. I am going out at nine with the scoop in my hand and my face up, and nobody out there is owed a word about any of it. You settled this, and I am spending it today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
